Listing 5-1 shows a condensed version of the CSDL that was generated when you added the tables through the EF designer. In this example, I have removed the Employee and Contact entities and their relationships with the other entities. What is left is a more concise example for you to start with. In this example, you have the EmployeeDepartmentHistory and Department entities and their associations (instead of having Contact and Employee, which are both larger in size). The first real node in Listing 5-1 is the Schema node pointing to the namespace schema that contains the information about the CSDL. I say that the first real node is Schema because the <edmx:ConceptualModels> node is .edmx specific and is not related to the CSDL. The next node is the <EntityContainer> node, which is used to specify the classes and associations in the object model. <EntitySet> and <AssociationSet> are child nodes of <EntityContainer>. As you can see in this example, you have two <EntitySet> nodes, which contain the Department and EmployeeDepartmentHistory data, and you have one <AssociationSet> node that contains the foreign-key relationship between these two entities. Moving on, your next node is the <EntityType> node, which contains the data about the Department entity. Here you have the <Key> node, which defines the primary key in the entity, and then you have <Property> nodes, which define the properties on the class, including their name, type, and nullability. Additionally, another child node of <EntityType> is <NavigationProperty>. The <NavigationProperty> node, as seen in Listing 5-1, is used to describe the foreign-key relationship between entities. Think of this as the association property or your shortcut from one entity to another.
